Galveston flooding 'everywhere' after persistent rains
GALVESTON -- After days of watching the devastation from across the bay, persistent rains from Tropical Storm Harvey on Tuesday finally arrived in Galveston, resulting in the most extensive flooding the island had seen during the dayslong storm.
While flooding didnt result in the need for many high-water rescues, as happened all over the mainland, in many areas floodwaters reached up to a foot high, and water began seeping into homes, businesses and parked cars. Residents were stuck in place as floods turned many streets into rivers and limited car access across town.
On The Strand in the citys historic downtown, water was above the curbs and estimated to be at about 3 feet deep, Mayor Jim Yarbrough said.
