Perot Museum welcomes its own rock star -- a gold nugget that weighs more than 50 pounds

It's reputed to be one of the world's most famous gold nuggets, and it's now on view at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science in Dallas. Billed as a rock star in the gem and mineral world, the Ausrox Gold Nugget was discovered by three prospectors in the Eastern Goldfield of Australia.

They used a hand-held metal detector to find it. It weighs 51.29 pounds, making it the third-largest gold nugget still in existence. The massive gold nugget was on loan as part of the original collection that debuted in the Lyda Hill Gems and Minerals Hall when the Perot opened in Victory Park in 2012. In 2015, the precious mineral headed south to the Houston Museum of Natural Science but is now back in all its glittering glory.
