A&M's firing of football coach Kevin Sumlin means another big buyout for a Texas school

by Matthew Watkins, Texas Tribune

Texas A&M University football coach Kevin Sumlin may have had his pride wounded when he was fired this weekend. But financially, he'll be no worse off.

Thanks to a raise and contract extension awarded to him in 2013, Sumlin is still entitled to the $10 million he would have been paid if he hadn't been fired by A&M, according to his employment contract.

That means Sumlin will join the ranks of several other coaches from Texas who will be paid millions by state schools not to lead their teams anymore.

According to his contract, Sumlin earned a base salary of $5 million per year. His deal entitled him to all that pay through the end of his contract — Dec. 31, 2019 — unless he was fired "with cause" for some kind of criminal or NCAA rules violation. Sumlin was accused of no wrongdoing when he was dismissed; he simply didn't win enough games.

Very simply, after "Johnny Football" left, Sumlin has been a loser.

The revenue coming in far exceeds the costs so paying this guy 5 million a year for not working is just part of the cost of doing business. As long as Aggie Football can rely on slave labor, the football players who by regulations can’t be paid, this will continue to be a big financial winner.

The coach seems expensive but since when did some egghead history professor spin out tens of millions in TV revenue?

An Aggie and a Longhorn were walking along the seawall in Galveston, when a seagull flew overhead and dropped a turd right on the Aggie's face. The Longhorn pulled out a handkerchief and said to the Aggie,
"Here, you can wipe it off with this."
The Aggie replied,
"Thanks, but that bird is probably a mile away by now."

===========================

A Longhorn and an Aggie were competing for a job, and the interviewer couldn't make up his mind which one was the better candidate, so he gave them an assignment, go write a poem using the word Timbuktu.

The Texas grad came back with his poem....

Across the shifting sands,
the pale moon echoes through the night,
shadow work in the corners of my mind..
of love forever lost.....
in Timbuktu.

"Wow, that's a great poem", said the interviewer. He then turned to the Aggie to hear what he had written. The Aggie proceeded to read his poem.

My friend Tim and me,
met these girls three,
we partied and danced the whole night through,
and having nothing else to do..
I buck one and
Tim buck two.

The frank truth is that men's football and basketball pays for all the other teams. There wouldn't be a swimming team for anybody if not for those two.

I don’t think the millions in profits justifies the brain damage. They need to change the rules.

I really don't see a way to change the rules and eliminate head injuries yet still keep it football. I just doubt that circle can be squared, unfortunately.
