Irving-based Fluor's Puerto Rico restoration contracts approaching $1 billion
Irving-based Fluor has landed a second major contract to restore power to hurricane-devastated Puerto Rico, just as the controversial Montana company Whitefish Energy Holdings is departing the island.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers gave Fluor a contract to repair the island's electricity grid currently valued at least $495 million but it could grow to as much as $831 million, the company announced this week. Earlier, the engineering and construction giant was awarded a contract that eventually grew to $501 million.
"With the support of the Corps and the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA), we are making daily progress," said Tom D'Agostino, president of Fluor's government group, said in a written statement. "We have people and the equipment in place and are adding resources as needed."
More than two-thirds of the island's power has been restored following the widespread damage from Hurricane Maria in September. Puerto Rico has about 3.4 million residents.
