Former Wharton police officer's sex crime guilty plea strips badge forever

A former Wharton police officer won’t spend any time behind prison bars, but will never wear a badge again after pleading guilty to sexual assault of a child in district court.

The case, involving a 16-year-old girlfriend, ended with Jeffrey Ryan Robles’ career almost two years ago when he resigned from the department citing personal reasons. Robles, 25, served on the Wharton Police Department from Feb. 7, 2014 to Jan. 29, 2016.

No, he deserves jail time since he committed sexual assault and statutory rape. He committed sexual assault against the girl three times.

to abuse or assault or exploit civilians, especially underage kids, should be treated MORE harshly under the law, not less.

Also, not meaning to be snooty, but I think the lead should read "A former Wharton police officer...after pleading guilty in district court to sexual assault of a child."

Otherwise, the literal meaning of the sentence is that he assaulted the child while in the courthouse.

I know you're quoting the article, so it's not your bad. But it makes me wonder, yet again, at the sloppy writing I see in the media these days. I agree with George Orwell that sloppy writing is often an indication of sloppy thinking.

Best wishes.

I live in Wharton and I believe that this cop stopped me while I was walking down the street because the police don't have enough to stay busy and they are trying generate revenue for the city. I wouldn't be surprised if he was with the girl while on duty.

As for sloppy writing--it seems like it is an epidemic at most places. However, I also expect that journalists would have better grammar skills.
