What does a $500 million Google data center mean for D-FW's 'Southern Star'?

In the old days, Midlothian branded itself as the Cement (pronounced CEE-ment in this neck of the woods) Capital of Texas, in reference to the handful of plants that companies like TXI, Ash Grove and Holcim have operated there since the 1960s.

Those heaven-stretching, smoke-belching industrial towers that demarcate the city limits as drivers come in off U.S. 67 were the town's economic engine for decades.

Larry Barnett, the president and CEO of Midlothian Economic Development, has his own catchphrase for the town with a population of about 25,000: "We make some pretty good stuff here."

"Stuff" still means cement as well as steel. But it will soon mean something far less tangible.
