Bexar files 1,000 lawsuits against late taxpayers

Some delinquent taxpayers soon could be getting a surprise visit from a process server delivering notice that they're being sued by Bexar County.

The county on Thursday filed 1,033 lawsuits to collect more than $7.6 million from property owners who have not paid their tax bills for 2011 or for prior years.

The county will seek to foreclose and then sell the properties to satisfy the tax debts if owners don't pay up.

In addition, the county is sending warning letters to almost 11,200 other delinquent taxpayers who haven't paid a collective $10.8 million in taxes. Those taxpayers also could be facing litigation if they don't pay.
