Hundreds of people crowded under a pavilion in Northgate on Sunday, armed with questions about energy, the environment, education and other topics for U.S. Senate candidate Beto O'Rourke.
The Democratic congressman from El Paso brought his campaign to College Station for a town hall-style event at the Wayside Food Park near the Texas A&M campus.
O'Rourke is challenging Republican U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz in the Nov. 6 election.
Wearing a Texas A&M University cap, O'Rourke touted his ability to work with members of both parties and said he votes with Republicans and Democrats alike.

(112,150 posts)Sure, we'll let him represent us in DC and go on the TV talk shows, but trying to snatch him away from us might start another civil war.
Now if you want to move to Texas and register to vote, then we can meet for a meal and discussion.

(205,265 posts)Despite all the angry LTTEs and the protests. And I'd give it serious thought if you could promise better weather! Hurricane Florence may be hitting south of here, though we are expecting serious rain, but then you had Harvey.
How's the winter look? If this coming winter is as brutal or lasts as long as last year's did, I'd even consider Florida!

(112,150 posts)I'm certain that the dreary 40 degree days in the winter would be a relief to you. We usually only have those a few days at a time then it gets back above 70. Bring your swimsuit!

(205,265 posts)We had record low temperatures - it got to be 20 below - all over the area. 40 degrees sounds balmy to me!

(112,150 posts)The neighbor is a retired English professor and he goes to New York for several weeks each summer to visit his brother.
Little does he know that I'm going to spring a pop quiz on him when he gets back to Texas. His favorite author is Dickens so I printed out a list of Dickens' works that are anagrams of the titles for him to decipher (the list was on DU in early August).
The man has lived in the same apartment for over thirty years and he said that the air conditioner went out about a dozen years ago. If that happened in this apartment I would be complaining to management the next day since I can't tolerate the heat, but he doesn't like to complain about anything and he is a pushover in that respect. It took him weeks to get his telephone service fixed when it went down earlier this year and he is driving a 1995 Toyota so the guy probably has a fat nest egg stashed back. It's one thing to be frugal, but considering that he doesn't have any other family makes me wonder if he expects to take it with him after he passes.

(205,265 posts)Western New York is known for particularly harsh winters! I went to college about halfway across the state and I should have known better, but then I didn't yet drive back then. Fortunately, it wasn't a huge campus, unlike my boarding school in Western Massachusetts, which was worse...
And it sounds like you made a friend in this neighbor. He probably appreciates the interest and the company. And no wonder he escaped to Texas, LOL. Western New York has arguably worse weather than what we experience here, though after last winter I'm not so sure.
And does he drive that car all the way to New York? Provably not or he'd be experiencing the rust issues that caused me to have to give up driving my 2001 Pontiac last November.
He sounds like an interesting guy - does he vote? I have more than one friend who I can't help unloading about politics on, so I do my best to spread the word. Maybe you could ask him for a ride to the polls - any chance he might like cats? He might welcome that company, too...

(112,150 posts)He knows that we have cats, but he isn't looking into adopting any pets.
He is a liberal (one of the few in this area). I also know someone else from the junior college who was a grant writer that received his PhD from UC-Berkeley back during the "Summer of Love" era. Those are the only two educated liberals that I know in this town though. Most of the professional people in this area are conservatives, but maybe I'll meet some more on Tuesday when I go to the college for an organizing event for Beto.
I'm trying to get a few other people in this apartment complex registered before the election. It's about 1.8 miles to the civic center where I vote so I'm capable of getting there on my bike. Most of the restaurants in town are located nearby so I usually grab something to eat on the way back home from voting.

(205,265 posts)And with his '95 car, I hope he has AAA! I used to drive south to NC with my grandmother every fall so she'd have her car, but then we had the company. One time the rain was such a deluge, we had to make an unplanned stop, spent the night in Hillsville, Virginia. That was our big adventure.
And if there's a liberal at the local college, isn't he influencing others? I can't see younger people going for Trump, especially after seeing plaid shirt guy and his cohorts.
I think it's terrific that you're showing up for Beto. I worked for my congressman on two elections, made GOTV calls for a third. It was a great experience and I learned a lot, ran into a few people I knew, but there were also paid workers. I made calls, stuffed envelopes and went door to door. If I do it again, the one thing I would change is not going door to door alone. Although our lists were comprised of likely Democratic voters, there were a couple of places where I was unwelcome, the worst being the guy who threatened to run me over with his car if I didn't get off his property.
I have also thought of being a poll worker, they probably need more Democrats, though the hours aren't ideal, LOL. Let me know how it goes!
