'I am deeply sorry:' Onalaska ISD superintendent resigns after black quarterback comments

Frustrated with quarterback Deshaun Watson's efforts at the end of the game, Onalaska ISD Lynn Redden said in part, "when you need precision decision making, you can't count on a black quarterback."

ONALASKA, Texas – Onalaska ISD superintendent Lynn Redden resigned from his position Saturday after a comment he made about Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson.

Redden announced his resignation in a letter sent to the Onalaska Board of Trustees. In it he wrote that he was "deeply sorry" for the comments he made about Watson and praised the quarterback for being a great role model.

"I would like to thank the OISD School Board of Trustees and staff for the past 12 years of working with in Onalaska and in the field of education," said Redden. "I do hope that those who know me well and those who have worked with me will remember me for my body of work over 42 years in public education, rather than by my unwarranted and inappropriate comments."

After the Texans lost to the Tennessee Titans Sunday, Redden made a comment on a Chron.com Facebook post that said, ”when you need precision decision making, you can’t count on a black quarterback.”
