Not counting people in 2020 Census could cost Texas millions
Civic leaders banded together Thursday to urge everyone in Bexar County and across Texas including undocumented immigrants to answer the 2020 Census questions next spring, emphasizing millions of dollars could be lost if the population count falls short.
If just 1 percent of the states population fails to respond to the survey, that could cost Texas at least $300 million in federal funds annually, Congressman Lloyd Doggett told the crowd at Progreso Hall on San Antonios West Side. It could also keep Texas from gaining more congressional seats.
Texas is right on the edge of getting either two or three new members of Congress, Doggett said. Thats two or three more people to advocate for Texans. So if we count everyone, we have a chance of expanding our delegation and our voice in Washington.
The U.S. Constitution requires the federal census bureau to conduct a count of everyone living in the United States every 10 years. The 2020 Census will begin that count in mid-March.
The data will be used to determine how much federal funding will be allocated to states and communities for roads, transportation, education, pre-kindergarten, hospitals, Medicaid, food stamps and other needs. The numbers will provide a snapshot of each states and each communitys demographics.
