A Texas woman was found guilty Friday by a federal jury for her part in a $5.5 million scheme to defraud the U.S. Department of Labor Office of Workers Compensation Program by overcharging for physical therapy and other services.
According to evidence presented during the five-day trial, Melissa Sumerour, 48, of Lorena, engaged in a scheme from approximately January 2011 to March 2017 to overbill for physical therapy. The evidence showed she billed for more than the therapy provided, which cost the Workers Compensation department more than $5.5 million.
Sumerour was found guilty on six counts of health care fraud. Her sentencing has not yet been scheduled.
Another defendant in the same scheme, Latosha Morgan, 42, of Grand Prairie, pleaded guilty and is scheduled for sentencing in March.
