It appears Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio soon will welcome Austin as a new member of their elite club the 10 largest cities in the U.S.
As it stands now, Austin ranks as the 11th largest city in the country, right behind San Jose, California. But a new projection from the City of Austin indicates that sometime next year, Austin will leapfrog San Jose to claim the No. 10 spot. Unless it sees an unlikely surge in population, San Jose would fall to No. 11.
Houston ranks as the countrys fourth-largest city, with San Antonio at No. 7 and Dallas at No. 9. When Austin climbs into the top 10, Texas will boast four of the countrys 10 largest cities. California currently has three cities in the top 10 (Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Jose).
According to this months Imagine Austin newsletter, released June 16, Austins ascent to No. 10 is coming sooner than we had previously anticipated. Thats because San Jose has witnessed population loss for several years in a row, while Austin keeps growing.

(19,564 posts)This bodes good for Texas turning blue sooner, too.
Still, I shed a tear for the loss of the old school weirdness and cheap, amazing music I enjoyed there in my college years. I'll raise the next glass of wine I drink to the memory of Leslie and the guy who used to have the car with all the happy meal and other toys glued all over it (my apologies, your name has escaped me) on 6th street. A page has since been turned and a new era is being lived.

(16,646 posts)These cities will never crawl into the top spots of NYC and the greater LA area. But they will turn the state blue.

(9,895 posts)Ar any rate, if we can get out the vote in Texas and turn that state blue, it is literally over on the national level for Republicans (more so than it already is now...)

(2,343 posts)and offers a nice range of climate to live in, so no surprise really. I visited Austin a few years ago for the first time in about 8 years and was blown away by the population explosion. I love that city.
One of the major problems with Texas: large swaths of empty space along with sparsely populated small towns filled with un-evolved yahoos.
On election night when Wendy Davis ran for governor, I followed the election results on my computer. In one county in west Texas area, she got 1(!) vote!!! One freaking vote!!! Of course, only like 50 people voted, but still. Long way to go out here.

(62,530 posts)I remember being downtown, on a sunday afternoon, at the Ruta Maya Coffee house on 4th street at 2 PM. I watched a stray dog take it's time walking across Lavaca because there just weren't any cars.
Thems were lazy slow times. I miss that Austin so much.

(112,196 posts)I knew three of the guys in Soul Hat that went to Southwestern. The bass guitar player and I actually played in the concert band together (he was in the percussion section).
I miss a lot of the music venues like The Black Cat and the 311 Club along with the dance clubs like The World and Hall's. The rent for those places climbed so much that it really wasn't feasible to keep the places open since they depended on the college and twenty-something crowds that didn't have a lot of money to spend.

(62,530 posts)I used to go there every Wednesday night to see the flametrick subs play lol. No cover charge, made money by selling lone star.
6th street was such a different place back then, you could actually go listen to a real jazz band and not some frat cover band forced upon you lol
