Texas is heading down a dangerous path, local leaders warn as coronavirus cases and hospitalizations

by Reese Oxner, Sarah R. Champagne, Shannon Najmabadi and Emma Platoff; Texas Tribune

As Texas' coronavirus cases and hospitalizations continue to break records for a second straight week, leaders and health experts in the largest cities are warning that the state is heading down a dangerous path and hospitals could soon be overwhelmed.

Gov. Greg Abbott struck a more urgent tone Monday, calling the increases in hospitalizations and cases across the state unacceptable. He said the state would only shut down businesses again as a last resort but cautioned that if trends don't reverse in the coming weeks, he'd be forced to take action.

"To state the obvious, COVID-19 is now spreading at an unacceptable rate in Texas, and it must be corralled," Abbott said during a news conference at the Texas Capitol in Austin.

Travis County and Austin-area cases dramatically increased over the weekend, surging to 6,210 on Monday, compared with about 4,991 reported Friday.

Texas is a good example how not to do policies with a dangerous pandemic under trump and Abbott, and they continue to try to force people out unprotected or tested adequately with their empty claims its over. That's a failure in leadership , promoting lies , promoting under reporting of the numbers, and refusing to enact measures already shown to provide the best results. That's what I think anyway, and see happening in Texas.

My big boss:
"Models of COVID-19’s impact on Bexar and surrounding counties suggest the number of hospitalized patients could nearly double in a week or two and multiply tenfold by August."

“We have what I refer to as ‘COVID virus fatigue’ with regard to our social interactions,” Dr. Henrich said. “We’ve let our guard down. We must counter this by wearing masks and returning to what thwarted the virus in the first place.”
