Georgetown millionaire, 91, finances building to house elderly dogs

BERTRAM — At 91, Georgetown millionaire Jack Garey is still determined to help the community. Even though he now uses a walker and is on oxygen, has a wife recovering from surgery and is nursing his sick dog, Garey showed up in a muddy field last week to celebrate his latest gift to Central Texas.

It is a $290,000 building called "Garey's Big Dog Bunkhouse," which will house elderly dogs at the Living Grace Canine Ranch in Bertram. Garey donated the money to the dog sanctuary to build the 4,000-square-foot structure. It has 26 kennels, a veterinary clinic, a storm shelter, air conditioning and heating, and a room with a couch where visitors can snuggle with the dogs.

Garey has previously donated $15 million to Southwestern University and given his 525-acre, $21 million ranch to the city of Georgetown, which has turned the land into a park. He also gave $5 million to Georgetown to help develop the park.

Garey donated millions to the Chisholm Trail Community Foundation, which his first wife, the late Cammy Garey, helped start, he said.

Mr. Garey is on the Board of Trustees at Southwestern University and I'm an alum. Neither Mr. Garey or his first wife graduated from Southwestern, but she grew up in Georgetown and took piano lessons from one of the music professors. They were both aware of the contributions that a liberal arts university makes in a small town (the population was around 5,000 in the late Mrs.Garey's youth) so they were generous with their donation.
