Parents of Texan Trevor Reed, former Marine jailed in Russia, regain contact with him before appeal
WASHINGTON — After more than a week without any news about their son, the parents of Trevor Reed, the former Marine and Fort Worth native jailed in Russia, said Monday they were able to reestablish contact with him ahead of an appeal hearing he has scheduled in Russian court on Tuesday.
On April 6, Reed’s parents, Joey and Paula Reed, released a statement saying that it had been five days without any word from Trevor.
“With each passing hour, we are more and more worried that something terrible has happened,” they said at the time. “To be clear, we are unable to confirm Trevor was ever transferred to the ‘prison hospital,’ nor can we confirm he has ended his hunger strike, nor that he has received any real medical care as Russian officials have claimed.”
In late March, Trevor Reed went on a hunger strike to protest the treatment he was receiving, and the Reeds have repeatedly said he’s fighting a worsening and largely untreated case of tuberculosis contracted during his imprisonment.
