Officials hope to make roads safer during Republic of Texas biker rally

Austin police and area law enforcement agencies are bumping up their presence and awareness during the Republic of Texas Biker Rally this weekend to curb the multiple motorcyclist deaths that happen during the event.

Authorities will be targeting aggressive and intoxicated drivers, especially motorcyclists, to reduce crashes and fatalities during this year’s event, which runs from Thursday through Sunday.

During the rally last year, five people died in Austin — three of whom were motorcyclists. Since 2007, 10 riders have died during the event. Police say it is unclear whether the deaths were rally-related.

Other unsafe behavior that law enforcement officials will be looking for include speeding, reckless driving, following too closely to another vehicle and failure to signal intent.
