Rathgeber approved as insurance commissioner

Julia Jeffrey Rathgeber did in 18 days what the former insurance commissioner couldn’t manage in the 140 days of the regular legislative session.

The state Senate Nominations committee on Friday voted to move forward with the nomination of Rathgeber, 48, to be the new head of the Texas Department of Insurance. The vote was unanimous, six ayes and zero nays. The whole process took exactly 20 minutes.

State Sen. Kirk Watson, D-Austin, introduced Rathgeber to the panel, a privilege of the appointee’s home senator. The state needs a smart and candid leader of the state’s insurance regulator, Watson said.

“We need to have a good strong commissioner of insurance,” Watson said. “Julia Rathgeber has those skills.”
