RICHMOND Lawmakers in Virginia on Thursday evening effectively killed a bill that would have made it possible for law enforcement agencies to keep officers names secret, postponing a debate that was attracting national attention to the state.

I used to work as a county elections official. On several occasions, we had police officers come in and tell us they wanted their names and addresses kept confidential, not released when one of the political parties requested a list of registered voters. They were shocked and surprised when we refused to do this. They automatically assumed they were entitled to this special treatment because they were law enforcement officers.

There are laws already on the books that protect their identity in legal cases under investigation.
What's that familiar refrain from the police: If you aren't doing anything illegal, then you have nothing to hide.
