CLEVELAND Gary C. Byler, a veteran Republican activist from Virginia Beach, jokes that presidential conventions are little more than cocktail parties. ... But in Bylers world, social is synonymous with political. Between sips of adult beverage, there are gulps of electoral intel, gossip and speculation.
For the voluble Byler and the other 48 members of the Virginia delegation to the GOP convention, that includes the latest on the internal maneuvering over little-understood national party rules in which ex-Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, Ted Cruzs former chief delegate hunter and an unrepentant Donald Trump skeptic, has had a commanding role.
As well, in the cocktail lounge, lobby and dining room of the nondescript motel in suburban Strongsville where the Virginians are billeted, the murmuring is turning to continuing speculation about a Democrat Tim Kaine and the possibility that Hillary Clinton will select him as her running mate, which could trigger a special election for his Senate seat next year.
Gov. Terry McAuliffe, a Democrat, would appoint an interim senator who would defend the seat in November 2017.
