The mayor of Fairfax City has been arrested and charged in connection with what authorities say was a methamphetamine-for-sex scheme.

Richard “Scott” Silverthorne, 50, was arrested as part of an undercover operation by police, authorities announced Friday. The scheme involved offers of meth in exchange for group sexual encounters with men, police allege.

Before his arrest Thursday, police claim Silverthorne provided the drug to undercover detectives at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Tysons Corner.

In late June, Silverthorne was laid off from his job as a director of recruitment with the National Association of Manufacturers. He owed about $58,000 to various creditors and filed for federal bankruptcy protection. ... A bank foreclosed on Silverthorne’s five-bedroom house and he moved into a nearby townhouse with a friend.

FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) — A northern Virginia mayor was facing drug charges Friday after his arrest in a meth-for-sex sting, police said. ... Fairfax Mayor R. Scott Silverthorne was arrested Thursday after meeting with undercover detectives at a hotel, police said.

After receiving a tip about a possible methamphetamine distributor in July, Fairfax County police said in a statement that they began an inquiry and identified a suspect distributing methamphetamine through a website used to arrange for casual sexual encounters between men. An undercover detective created a profile on the site and police said within days the suspect, who turned out to be Silverthorne, made contact and they then communicated by text.

Police said he was also a substitute teacher for the Fairfax County Public Schools.

His father, the late Frederick Silverthorne, was mayor of Fairfax in the late 1970s and early 1980s. ... Scott Silverthorne, a Democrat, also served on the Fairfax City Council.

4. Virginia mayor to resign after arrest in drugs-for-sex sting

McLEAN—The mayor of the Virginia city of Fairfax is resigning after his arrest last week in which police say he attempted to trade drugs for sex in a sting operation.

City officials said in a news release Monday that R. Scott Silverthorne’s resignation will take effect at noon Thursday.

Silverthorne was arrested last Thursday on a felony drug distribution charge. Police say they received a tip that Silverthorne was using a dating website to set up sexual encounters with other men in exchange for drugs.

Police set up a sting operation, posting a profile on the website that they expected would appeal to him. Within two days, police said, Silverthorne contacted the undercover officers through the website to set up a meeting.
