ABC draws big crowd of potential bidders to replace warehouse and headquarters behind the Diamond
Nearly 150 people representing more than 50 companies showed up Tuesday morning to tour the state liquor warehouse that the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage is eager to replace, either at its current 21.5-acre site behind The Diamond in Richmond or somewhere close to an interstate in the region.
Divaris Real Estate Co., based in Virginia Beach, conducted the pre-bid tour of the ABC warehouse and adjacent department headquarters for commercial developers interested in submitting proposals to build or renovate a new home for an operation that is critical to Virginia's $900 million liquor monopoly.
The outcome also could be critical to the hopes of the Richmond Flying Squirrels and Virginia Commonwealth University to open the ABC site at 2901 Hermitage Road to eventual redevelopment as a baseball stadium for the Double-A franchise and the university's baseball program.
Bids are due Aug. 11, but the initial interest "is high," said Michael B. Divaris, president of the real estate firm, which has an office Richmond.
