C-ville Weekly about the Charlottesville lockdown

Last edited Thu Aug 9, 2018, 01:35 PM - Edit history (2)

A summary of the preparations for this weekend that includes local reactions.

It continues ...

Some snippets from this story:

UPDATED: Anniversary prep: City on lockdown
...

“We understand that the city and the task fowarce [sic] are concerned with safety, however, does closing down the city out of an abundance of caution play right into the hands of the Nazis and this negative anniversary?” asks Janet Dob, a longtime City Market vendor.

...

Rodi says he’s “disgusted” by the Virginia General Assembly, which refused to add Charlottesville to a list of cities where open carry of guns is prohibited. “While you can’t bring an aerosol can or pocket knife into a restricted area, you can bring an AR15,” he says.

...

The University of Virginia, which endured the horrifying spectacle of torch-carrying neo-Nazis marching through Grounds last year on August 11, announced plans to restrict access over the weekend to the Lawn (except for residents and attendees of a ticketed event August 11) and to the plaza on the north side of the Rotunda, where a small group of counterprotesters were surrounded by white supremacists at the statue of university founder Thomas Jefferson. Staff erected barricades six feet around the Jefferson statue August 6, but UVA Students United have planned a rally at the Rotunda’s north plaza from 7 to 9pm August 11. The group’s Facebook page says students met with Gloria Graham, vice president of security and safety, who said there will still be access to most of the plaza. University spokesperson Anthony de Bruyn confirms that access limitations only extend to part of the plaza.

...

“Nobody puts Baby in a corner,” says Viejo, quoting Patrick Swayze. Adds Dob, “That’s exactly what the city is doing—putting all of downtown in a corner and not allowing its goodness to shine.”

I'll try to stick to Northern Virginia developments, but I think I can get away with this:

WITH STATE OF LOCAL EMERGENCY IN PLACE, SAFETY AND SECURITY ARE TOP PRIORITIES FOR WEEKEND

....
On Wednesday, the City of Charlottesville, County of Albemarle and state announced that a local state of emergency had been declared. The declaration is a required administrative step that positions officials to draw on additional public safety resources as needed.

The declaration has not altered the University’s operations at this time. Any changes in the University’s operating schedule due to an emergency or other public safety issue will be posted on the University’s Operation Status Board website and communicated to the UVA community on multiple platforms.
....

Access to the following areas will be limited starting now and continuing through the weekend:

• Certain areas of the upper plaza surrounding the Jefferson statue on the north side of the Rotunda will be restricted through Monday, Aug. 13 at 7 a.m.

• On Saturday, Aug. 11, from 6 a.m. until noon, access to the Lawn will be limited to attendees for a ticketed event and Lawn residents.

• Activities and events in the Academical Village, the Rotunda and its North Plaza will be subject to higher security. This includes extending the existing prohibition of firearms to the North Plaza, through Aug. 13 at 7 a.m.

• The City of Charlottesville has posted information about road closures and restricted areas on its website. If you expect to be downtown, please be sure to check this webpage for frequently asked questions and other updates.

The following items are prohibited throughout all University facilities and University property through Aug. 13 at 7 a.m.:

BB guns, pellet guns, air rifles or pistols, paintball guns, nun chucks, tasers, stun guns, heavy gauge metal chains, lengths of lumber or wood, poles, bricks, rocks, metal beverage or food cans or containers (used for any purpose other than consumption of food or drinks), glass bottles, axes, axe handles, hatchets, ice picks, acidic or caustic materials, hazardous or flammable or combustible liquids, skateboards, swords, knives, daggers, razor blades or other sharp items, metal pipes, pepper or bear spray, mace, aerosol sprays, catapults, wrist rockets, bats, sticks, clubs, drones, explosives, fireworks, open fire or open flames, and any other item considered an “implement of riot.”

Items like glass bottles, metal beverage and food containers, and personal toiletries will be allowed as long as they are being used for their intended purpose.

"goodness" allowed this debacle to kill a woman, Heather Heyer and injure hundreds at the hands of white supremacists, nazi's and KKK all. "Goodness"???????????? Right. Shut these animals down, put them down if necessary. White cops do it to AA human beings, unarmed mind you, almost every day. While these rabid animals are allowed to carry AR-15's and 9mm's and threaten, openly, to use them and they get the pass. That's the" goodness" of Charlottesville Virginians, right?

Anyone here who sat out the 2016 election for any reason beyond legal, is responsible for this, the death of Heather Heyer and the injury of hundreds of anti-hate protestors last year.

FASCISTS. Portland very recently is proof of the statement. Last year Charlottesville, (Heather Heyer KIA), many many WIA by white racist while police stood around with their thumbs up their ass, Oscar Grant Protest, MLK Birmingham Ala. Civil Rights Protest(Bull Conner)Greensboro 1976 KKK protest, Kent State. Just arbitrarily, 1963 to 2018 55 years and Fascists still protecting fascists. Please stay on guard aware 360 or someone on your 6, stay as safe as possible. As one from the 60's I am so proud people will still stand up to the hate.

We did so much, but I am sad that it now seems we did too little.

Heather was the granddaughter of of a former co-worker and friend. This is close to home.

we really did do great. Every American generation will have this responsibility to fight back against the racist forces that are alive and well slithering through the grasses in Amerika. Hopefully, they can be beaten back, again, into the toilets and sewers. Unfortunately, this is the truth of a hateful subculture of basically decent and compassionate people. It's just they can seem so ubiquitous and a constant threat to the well being of the AA race and of really this nation. Sad to say.

We also fought back against the Vietnam War, which in many respects was a racist war. And they shot some of us dead for doing that.
