Loudoun School Board again considers LGBTQ discrimination protections

Loudoun School Board again considers LGBTQ discrimination protections
By Veronike Collazo, vcollazo@loudountimes.com Feb 13, 2019 Updated 3 hrs ago

The Loudoun County School Board is again considering a policy that protects against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

The latest policy proposal, introduced as an information item at a Tuesday board meeting, would serve in an aspirational capacity in the first chapter of all LCPS policies. Advocates say the policy would help protect LGBTQ employees and students, while detractors say the policy is too broad and could leave room for unintended consequences.

The board previously considered an LGBTQ non-discrimination policy specific to employment. The board voted against adding LGBTQ protections in a 4-5 vote nearly two years ago. LGBTQ advocates have consistently addressed the board since then, sharing statistics, personal stories and anecdotes as to why the protections are necessary.

Debbie Rose (Algonkian District) said all students deserve compassion, but she couldn’t support the proposed policy because of the broad language. She said the proposal could eventually allow transgender students and visitors in the bathrooms and locker rooms of their choice and on sports teams that align with their gender identity, which she said LCPS needs more time to figure out.
....

Robert Rigby, president of Fairfax County Public Schools Pride, said at every FCPS new teacher week in August he meets teachers who have left LCPS because of the school system’s lack of LGBTQ employment protections.
....

UPDATE: This article has been updated to better reflect the context behind statements of LGBTQ teachers in schools being a non-issue made by Debbie Rose.
