UVa declines White House invite to celebrate championship

The Virginia men’s basketball team ended weeks of speculation Friday in declining an invitation to celebrate its 2019 men’s NCAA Tournament championship with President Donald Trump at the White House.

No men’s basketball national champion has visited the White House since Trump took office in January 2017, breaking with decades of precedent.

Coach Tony Bennett cited scheduling difficulties in declining the invite.

“We have received inquiries about a visit to the White House,” Bennett said in a statement. “With several players either pursuing pro opportunities or moving on from UVa, it would be difficult, if not impossible to get everyone back together. We would have to respectfully decline an invitation.”
