NEWPORT NEWS Several hundred workers at Continentals Newport News plant were told Wednesday the plant will close in a little less than five years. About 740 people work at the factory that manufactures hydraulic components for gas engines.
The company had told workers in August that it planned to shift its business and research dollars with the rest of the automotive industry to electric technology but didnt have specific plans at the time. While existing orders for combustion engine components would be filled, new orders will play an increasingly marginal role, the company said then. The companys evolution has also been driven by fewer cars being built and new technology powering them, including automated systems.
On Wednesday, Continental officials visited employees in person and announced its transformation would affect 20,000 jobs worldwide in the next 10 years, including the closures of its Newport News plant and a factory in Henderson, N.C., which has 540 workers. That plant is expected to close sooner than the Peninsula factory. Worldwide, Continental employs about 244,000.

If theres any good news, she said, its that people arent going home thinking Im going to be out of a job next month.
There are options around the world for employees who can transfer to open roles within the company. Staying close to home would be a challenge for those on the factory floor; the nearest Continental plants are in Culpeper and Morganton, N.C.
Workers will be given a minimum of 60 days notice before their job is eliminated, she said. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace workers represents about 370 employees, she said.
