Feds come through with $1.4 billion for Federal Way light rail extension
The U.S. Department of Transportation is committing $1.4 billion to construction of the 7.8 mile Federal Way light rail extension, which will by 2024 bring transportation choices to those who currently endure some of the worst traffic congestion on Interstate 5 and freeway choke points on national top-10 lists.
The $790 million grant and $629 million low-interest loan will permit construction to begin early next year.
"It takes forever to travel to and from South King County because of worsening traffic jams: Thanks to this federal funding for the light rail project, an option to escape traffic gridlock in South King County is on the way," said King County Councilmember Dave Upthegrove.
U.S. Rep. Adam Smith, D-Wash., predicted: "This project will be transformative for the region and it is great news that federal funding has been approved for the expansion."
