Coronavirus cases flattening across Washington, health department report says

Over the past few months, most counties across Washington have seen novel coronavirus cases rise. As counties reopened and social interactions increases, cases across the state shot up.

But now, according to the most recent situation report from the Washington State Department of Health, the number of cases in most counties across the state appears to be flattening -- and it is a trend among all age groups.

"While this is encouraging news and a sign of our collective efforts, we must not let our guard down,” Secretary of Health John Wiesman said in a statement. “Plateauing is not enough to keep this pandemic under control; we must transition to a state of sustained decline in new cases. It remains critical that we continue to stay home when possible, keep interactions with others brief and wear face coverings.”

According to the report, the reproductive number -- the number of people one infected person will spread the virus to -- is around 1. In Western Washington on July 26, the best estimate for the reproductive number was likely about 0.97, according to the report.

I still see folks without them, but most people seem to be wearing them in my area.
