Downtown business organizations ask city council to reconsider 'Amazon Tax'

The Downtown Seattle Association (DSA) and other groups representing downtown business interests are asking the City Council to reconsider the Jumpstart tax on big businesses.

"We respectfully urge you to reconsider your decision to impose this tax during the most severe economic crisis to hit Seattle in nearly 100 years. With the expiration of federal PPP loans — and continued restrictions on mobility and economic activity in King County — Seattle companies face a scary economic cliff and many unknowns," wrote DSA President and CEO Jon Scholes in a letter published Friday.

The letter to city officials came as Bloomberg reported Amazon was considering moving some employees out of their South Lake Union campus after an internal survey gauged employee interest in moving to other Puget Sound cities. The e-commerce company has declined to comment on the survey.

"This news should be deeply concerning to the city and is another early warning of the long-term, damaging impacts that Seattle’s tax on jobs will have on recovery, the city’s future economic health, and local tax revenues to fund critical municipal services," Scholes wrote.
