Calls for SPOG president to resign over tweets appearing to blame BLM for Capitol riots

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan, former candidate for Seattle City Attorney Scott Lindsay and retired Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best are calling on the Seattle Police Officers Guild President Mike Solan to apologize or resign following a tweet the appears to claim Black Lives Matter protesters were part of the siege of the Capitol building in D.C. on Wednesday.

In a Tweet Thursday, Lindsay wrote “As someone who has fought for police reform and defended Seattle Police against defunding, I have a duty to call out when the head of their union spreads misinformation about the Capitol attack. @realmikesolan should apologize or resign. SPD officers deserve better.”

Best retweeted Lindsay on Thursday adding “BLM was not the cause of yesterday’s insurrection. We have to tell the truth.”

The mayor's office released a statement Saturday saying, "The SPOG President’s statement is wrong, immoral, and a lie. The violent and seditious actions we all witnessed were done by anti-government mobs, inspired and directed by President Trump and his legion of enablers. His statements do a huge disservice to the hundreds of police officers who work daily to serve the public and the rule of law, believe in equality, and were disgusted by Wednesday’s events.

Are there some police union and guild leaders who do not reek of this? I want to think that inbred racism, intolerance, and the need to exert authority over others, usually to a degree wholly incommensurate with the circs, is limited to a small fraction of the actual police corps, but the scum does seem to rise to the upper level in many cases.
