City to expand access to West Seattle low bridge for certain groups
The Seattle Department of Transportation announced Thursday that it will ease restrictions on motorists traveling on the Spokane Street Swing Bridge and allow certain groups, including health care workers, those in need of lifesaving medical care and area restaurant and retail workers, to more freely use the low bridge.
The agency also plans to modify restricted hours on the lower span in order to provide three additional hours for weekend travel on the low bridge. Starting April 10, anyone can use the low bridge from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. during the weekend but weekday restrictions will remain the same, the department said.
"Recent traffic data shows that volumes are low enough to allow additional (weekend) access," the transportation agency said in a written statement.
The city closed the West Seattle High Rise Bridge in March 2020 after inspectors found cracks in the structure that could have led to a catastrophic failure.
