Tacoma, Seattle ports see big container shipping cargo bump in March
Dock workers handling goods at the ports of Seattle and Tacoma saw a 25% surge in marine cargo in March, bolstered by domestic trade with Alaska and Hawaii, more new cars and a new e-commerce express service from Asia.
The Northwest Seaport Alliance, the joint venture marine partnership between the ports of Seattle and Tacoma, said it handled a total of 330,175 20-foot-equivalent shipping container units (TEUs) in March, growing 25% compared with March 2020 as the effects of a global pandemic began to hit.
Total cargo imported through the two ports increased 66.5% while full exports slumped 11.6%, the public agency said in its latest monthly marine cargo data report.
Marine cargo volumes have improved almost 12% to 881,794 TEUs so far in 2021 compared with the first quarter a year ago, the NWSA said.
