Seafair will go mostly virtual this summer with just 2 live events

Seafair, the popular annual nonprofit festival spanning 10 summer weeks with an array of signature events, will be mostly virtual this summer, launching at www.seafair.org on June 18.

"Seafair wants to bring back its events and remains heartbroken for our fans for a second summer,” said Patrick Harrison, one of four full-time Seafair employees back at work. “We have to plan in the Covid phase we are in, not in the phase that we hope to be in. It obviously takes months to pull all this together, with so many contracts and financial decisions to be made. We cannot take those risks in the hopes that we will be in the clear at launch.”

The festival, which attracts more than 2 million people through seven signature events and over 25 sanctioned community functions, will only stage two live events this summer. Both are runs: the Seafair Torchlight Run and the Seafair Triathlon. The dates and routes of those events are still being determined, but the Triathlon will be staged in Sammamish rather than Seward Park to both avoid street closures and broaden Seafair’s community.

The much-anticipated Fourth of July fireworks show will be a broadcast replay from a previous year. The Milk Carton Derby, Fleet Week, the Boeing Air Show featuring the Blue Angels and the hydroplane races will all be virtual programming, pulled together from other years.
