Coast Guard eyes expansion of Seattle waterfront base

The U.S. Coast Guard is weighing plans to expand and modernize its base on Seattle's waterfront, including the possible redevelopment of port property currently reserved for container shipping.

Details emerged publicly Friday from Port of Seattle and Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA) officials.

"The public should know about it," said Fred Felleman, Seattle Port Commission president and co-chairman of the NWSA, a joint venture between the ports of Seattle and Tacoma. "We're being presented with three different versions of the future of the waterfront."

The Coast Guard's Seattle office did not respond to email and telephone requests for more information about its plans, the timeline or expected cost.
