New King County law requires EV chargers in new and refurbished apartment buildings
With some major automakers set to stop producing internal combustion engines in 14 years, there's a growing buzz about electric vehicles, and King County amplified that on Tuesday.
The County Council voted unanimously to require new developments in unincorporated areas to include car charging stations and dedicated parking for electric vehicles.
The legislation requires new or substantially remodeled apartment buildings to make 10% of parking spaces capable of charging electric vehicles, meaning they must have the equipment to connect and charge. In addition, 25% of spaces must be EV-ready, meaning the infrastructure is in place to install a charger in the future.
As we continue to face the growing impact of climate change on our day-to-day lives, it's vital that we think creatively and proactively about how to make eco-friendly choices accessible, such as electric vehicles, County Councilmember Jeanne Kohl-Welles said in a news release.
