Leavenworth digs out from winter blast that dumped heavy snow on the town

LEAVENWORTH, Wash. -- A portion of US 2 over Stevens Pass reopened Thursday after being closed for an entire week due to heavy snowfall.

The highway's reopening is welcome news for the town of Leavenworth, whose residents are still digging out from the winter blast last week that dumped several feet of snow onto the town. The heavy snowfall prompted the city's mayor to declare a state of emergency.

On Thursday, Jay Haggar spent time shoveling snow in the parking lot that's located across from his Leavenworth hotel. He hopes to clear a few more spaces ahead of what’s expected to be a busy weekend.

"Oh yeah, much better," said Haggar, owner of The Bavarian Ritz Hotel.

Even tho it can contribute to floods in warmer spring.
