Catalytic converter bill to get public hearing in Legislature
Thieves who steal catalytic converters are coming under fire in the state Legislature.
Senate Bill 5495 goes to a public hearing Tuesday morning offering people a way to submit feedback and help craft a solution. Sen. Jeff Wilson, R-Longview, the bills sponsor said hes open to amendments and wants to hear ideas.
Catalytic converter thefts have soared in the past year. They are quick to cut out from the exhaust system underneath vehicles and thieves can sell the precious metals contained inside to scrap yards.
Curtis Gehrke owns Acme Auto Electric & Repair in Seattle and said he fields a lot of calls from people trying to replace a stolen catalytic converter. Occasionally Gehrke sells broken catalytic converters to places like Lynnwood recycle where they are careful not to accept anything that's stolen.
