Seattle council members reach deal on police hiring incentives

Two members of the Seattle City Council at odds over public safety hiring incentives have found a way forward, the mayor's office said on Monday.

With crime a top issue among voters, freshman Councilmember Sara Nelson has been eager to take steps to enact incentives to attract police officers while Lisa Herbold, chair of the council public safety committee, has not.

Herbold said the city needs to fill other positions and cites a report released by Mayor Bruce Harrell that says traditional hiring bonuses have a limited impact on retention and "potential inherent drawback and equity issues for both the employer and employees."

Harrell is working on what his office's press release called a more comprehensive recruitment strategy that he plans to present before summer.
