Light Snow Possible Next Week As Cold Front Arrives: Seattle Forecast

SEATTLE — Temperatures are on track to take a dive by late in the weekend, thanks to an incoming cold front that is poised to bring sub-freezing overnight temperatures and a chance for low-elevation snow.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service are tracking a "modified Arctic front," that is due to drop south from Canada starting late in the week, setting up a trend of much colder temperatures through at least next Tuesday.

Typically, afternoon temperatures average in the high 40s in late January, and by Sunday look to drop into the 30s, with overnight lows in the mid-20s. That means any moisture that may materialize will likely fall as snow, but it is still a little early to know how things will pan out, forecasters said.

"Snow levels drop below 500 feet as scolder air settles deep into the region amidst persistent northerly flow Sunday and Monday thanks to high pressure to our north over [British Columbia] and Alberta," NWS Seattle wrote Tuesday. "This sets the stage for potential light snow over the foothills to maybe even sea level during this time. Ensemble guidance continues to suggest light snow may occur in the lowlands, though it is too far out to discuss any accumulation totals at this time."
