BBB of Washington: Scammers pretending to be government agencies

With tax season well underway, the Better Business Bureau of Washington is warning consumers about the seasonal rise in "government imposter" scams.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) said these types of scams involved people pretending to represent government agencies all in an effort to steal consumers' personal information and money.

"A consumer recently reported to the BBB’s Scam Tracker a situation where they received a text message from what was supposedly the United States Postal Service, that said their package is not deliverable," said Logan Hickle of the BBB of Washington. "The text instructed this person at home to click on a link and pay to get their package delivered at another time."

This scam reported to the BBB Scam Tracker is a typical route criminals will take to get consumers to enter payment information, according to Hickle.

1. I just had friend request from a FB friend yesterday.

I confirmed it but thought wait a minute, I am already friends with her. Before I could report it I got a messnge on messeger from "her". The person generically asked me how I was doing and I replied I an doing fine, thank you for asking. Then they asked how tje family was doing then asked ee if I had recently gotten anything from "dhhs" in lower case letters. Now I had already determined that it was a fraud so I replied do you mean the Department of Health and Human Services? They said yes and asked if I had recieved my free money yet and where about to tell me how when I stop them and said I already have a FB friend named... and the person replied back oh yes that is my supervisors account then they abruptly ended chat. Then apparently killed the account. I still had the friend icon under my friends (two if them) thd upper one had the friends about info. The second had no about information and just two friends me and someone based Susan.
I alerted on the second in FB and the alerted my FB friend.
