Sea-Tac gets share of $37M in federal infrastructure funds for WA airports

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport was one of three airports in Washington state to share $37 million in federal funding Monday for infrastructure projects to expand terminal and safety checkpoint spaces.

The projects were among 99 nationwide to receive funding this year under the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which disburses $1 billion annually for airport improvements through the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Terminal Program. The same Washington airports received $33.8 million from the program last year.

“As more people rely on air travel, building better airport terminals improves the passenger experience, enhances U.S. competitiveness, boosts long-term economic recovery and creates more jobs,” Rep. Rick Larsen, D-Everett, the ranking Democrat on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, said in a news release Monday.

Sea-Tac Airport received $16 million for its $37 million Checkpoint 1 relocation project, which shifts the security checkpoint from the ticketing level down to the baggage claim level. The project will provide more space for new screening technologies, expanding its capacity to meet higher demand.
