Mine is 420sqft. So was my last apt. They should come to Montana and see what a small 1BR looks like. And no closets.

Living in 425 and 525 sq ft apartments since 1988 in San Diego. No garage, closets, etc. I would love to be able to afford over 600 sq ft but it won't be happening in my lifetime due to the cost of health bills and insurance for over 35 years. I have the room to buy one roll of TP at a time. My oven is used for storage. Buying in bulk to save money...out of the question.

Is it fair to compare a whole state with a city?

Seattle for a large part is limited by geography. It is an isthmus with Puget Sound on one side and Lake Washington on the other. It is then bisected by Lake Union, the Ballard locks and the Montlake cut.

Being a popular city with its dearth of developable land contributes to the price of rent.

not even close to that. People must make a very good income to live there.
