Sears to close Southcenter store, its last in Washington

The national big-box retailer that helped shape American consumerism in the 20th century is saying goodbye to its last Washington store.

Store closing and clearance signs hang at the Sears store at the Westfield Southcenter mall, with plans to shutter next month after more than three decades at the location. That leaves eight remaining stores for the company, which at its peak operated about 3,500 locations nationwide.

A closing date is set for Dec. 15, per multiple reports. Representatives for Sears did not immediately respond to requests for comment. A spokesperson for the mall declined to comment.

The mall is owned by French real estate company Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield, which acquired all of Westfield's properties for $15.7 billion in 2017.
