King County Council passes $135M Safeco Field compromise out of committee

The King County Council reviewed the terms of Safeco Field's upkeep funding on Wednesday morning.

A King County Council committee voted on Wednesday to move ahead on a compromise deal to send tax funds to Seattle's Safeco Field.
The amended version would spend $135 to $145 million on Safeco Field -- down from an earlier demand for $180 million -- and leave the rest of the money for affordable housing. None of the funds, collected from the state's lodging tax, would go toward tourism directly.

Councilmembers Claudia Balducci and Joe McDermott brought the amendment after another amendment -- that would have sent considerably less funding to Safeco -- failed.

Balducci argued it was a reasonable investment of the tax funds, with more money toward affordable housing. McDermott agreed, noting that it was not a perfect solution for either side.

"This is a compromise, a balance. I don't expect there are champions for it -- it's a compromise," McDermott said.
