Democrats poised to gain State Senate seats in tight races
The Democrats' one-vote advantage in the Washington State Senate is going to grow by as many as four seats, the exact number depending on down-to-the wire races in King, Whatcom and Kitsap counties.
The party is certain to expand its 50-48 seat advantage in the House of Representatives, having picked up two seats in east King County, and leading in contests for three Republican-held seats elsewhere in Western Washington.
Larger majorities could embolden Democrats on such issues as abolishing the death penalty -- passed by the Senate but failed in the House this year -- and enacting a capital gains tax on wealthy Washington citizens.
Battlegrounds being watched:
--The lead in the 47th District's Senate race, in Southeast King County, flipped in the Thursday afternoon dump from King County Elections.
Republican State Sen. Joe Fain had been ahead by 90 votes. He now trails Democratic challenger Mona Das by 206 votes. The returns came on a day that State Senate leaders announced they're hiring an investigator to probe a woman's allegation that Fain raped her a decade ago in Washington, D.C.
