Cliff Mass: 'Seattle should buy more snowplows'

Seattle would save school days, help commerce, prevent traffic accidents and give longevity to its political leaders were the Emerald City to buy more snowplows, popular UW atmospheric sciences professor Cliff Mass argues on his weather blog.

"Can you imagine how popular Mayor Durkan would be if she got the additional plows and the city was nearly snow free during the next snow event?" asked Mass. "She would be mayor for LIFE."

Mayor Jenny Durkan, after an event at The Mountaineers, responded: "I will have to read his column."

The mayor voiced general satisfaction with Seattle's snow response, in which major arterials were plowed far more quickly than in the city's last great "Snowpocalypse" in December 2008. Slow response at the time is credited with defeating then-Mayor Greg Nickels' bid for a third term the following year.

The sidewalks and parking lots were worse than the roads (it also wasn't just Seattle, Shoreline was way worse).

The damn snowplows left a mountain of rockhard ice at the end of our driveway which kept our vehicles trapped for some days, and covering the drains which would have probably increased the flooding.

I've seen some neighbours conscientiously shoveling their sidewalks, only for a mountain of hard snow to be thrown up there immediately afterwards. The sidewalks were virtually unusable and un-shovelable because if it.

I don't remember having this issue elsewhere before.
