Sawant has raised $76,725, leads Seattle City Council fundraising
Incumbent socialist Seattle City Councilmember Kshama Sawant is far ahead in both raising and spending money for this fall's election, having taken in $76,725 and spent $37,429 according to her end-of-March filing.
Claiming big business will be out to get her, Sawant has declined to participate in Seattle's democracy voucher program, which provides public support but imposes spending limits for the August primary and November general election.
One of her opponents in Council District 3, pot shop owner Logan Bowers, has qualified for democracy vouchers and has received $36,800 under the program.
Seattle voters receive four $100 vouchers in the mail, under a program approved by the city's voters. They can give all the money to a candidate of their choice who has qualified for the program, or spread it around.
