Wisconsin: Walker appointee who is finalist for a top UW System post lacks college degree

Cronyism doesn't require a degree, but you'd think that being hired as a VP at the University of Wisconsin would ...

Georgia Maxwell, assistant deputy secretary for the state Department of Financial Institutions, is one of five finalists for the newly created position of vice president for university relations for the UW System, overseeing its PR and lobbying efforts. She was appointed to her state job by Gov. Scott Walker.

An official with UW-Madison confirmed Thursday that Maxwell left the university with 114 credits. Most programs require students to have at least 120 credits to graduate. "According to our registrar's office, she attended UW-Madison but does not hold a degree from UW-Madison," said Dennis Chaptman, interim director of news and media relations at the university.

Maxwell said in a lengthy Thursday email that she attended UW-Madison from 1987 to 1993, believing she had earned enough credits to graduate when she left. She noted that she was permitted to walk with her class at a commencement ceremony. "However, I learned sometime in the late-2000s that my final credits were not on my record due to an issue with payment of that last class and my status was incomplete," Maxwell said. "At the time I learned this, I was busy juggling young children and my career, so I just did not have the time to take the steps necessary to resolve the matter."

Maxwell said she has never represented that she has a college degree, noting that her official bio on the DFI website says she only "attended" UW-Madison. The resume she submitted for the UW System post doesn't say whether she got a degree. A news release announcing that she would run Walker's 2008 re-election campaign for county executive says Maxwell "received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison." Maxwell said Thursday that she did not recall ever seeing the release and would have corrected it if she had.

If she owed money, then all she had to do was pay the tuition owed and she would have the degree (that was her excuse)….plus too busy raising kids and career. She went for six years probably on and off so she accumulated 116 credits out of 120. I could understand not finishing the 120, but to have people announce you graduated from the school is wrong. Of course there are 5 candidates for the job so this might be done anyway.

She claims that sometime in the late 2000s she learned that the last credits didn't count because of a tuition payment. How does she explain that was unaware of this and at the same time knowing that she never received a diploma?

When a Walker appointed Regent describes the System as, "a big business with a strong link to the academic world," you know they have no interest in protecting the tradition of quality education in WI. Fuck Walker, Vos and the rest of the anti-intellectual regressionists that are turning Wisconsin into Alabama.
