Bar owners respond to possible liquor law changes
Laramie bar owners are divided about new legislation that could allow them to set their own rules for permitting unattended minors into alcohol-serving establishments.
After July 1, Wyoming legislation will no longer impose an age restriction on alcohol-serving establishments other than package liquor stores and restaurant liquor license holders. While local governments can adopt ordinances prohibiting minors from alcohol-serving establishments, the Laramie City Council discussed allowing liquor license holders to regulate themselves during a work session in March.
“I feel it would be beneficial for it to be under the discretion of license owners,” Gateway Liquors owner Rajeev Patel said. “That business that we built solely depends on that license, so we’re not going to do anything that would jeopardize that license.”
State and federal law still prohibits the sale of alcohol to minors, but some councilors said the establishments would benefit from setting their own terms.
