EPCOR starts rolling power blackouts in Edmonton

Power outages were reported across Edmonton Tuesday afternoon after EPCOR started rolling blackouts to reduce electricity consumption.

EPCOR spokesman Tim LeRiche confirmed the utility received a request from the Alberta Electricial System Operator to reduce power.

The current heatwave pushed electricity demands past last summer's record of 9,885 megawatts. AESO said that several generators are also offline for planned and unplanned maintenance. A transformer also went out of service.
