The bit which caught my eye was this :
"The River Ouse at York, which flooded riverside car parks on Wednesday, has now reached its peak at 5.06m above normal level."
That's over 16 feet !
Whilst I obviously sympathise with everyone affected I hope nobody here is personally affected. It completely missed the south east I think : Monday and Tuesday were more or less bright and sunny.

(14,749 posts)Although there are plenty of DUer's in New York, I don't think there are any in old York. I must admit though that York is one of my favourite places in the UK.
The weather where I am was shite all day Monday, most of Tuesday, and some of the day yesterday. Usually this week it's been constant drizzle.

Such things happen here from time to time.
The worst possible scenario is actually a very low pressure area of the north west coast of Scotland coinciding with a spring tide - the combination raises the level of the North Sea. That's why the Thames Barrier was built.
Worst incident in modern history was probably this which also led to the Dutch developing what may be the the most sophisticated flood defence system in the world :
